I know I'm in the minority here, but Starlancer was one the main reasons I loved my Dreamcast so much.
Starlancer was another Chris Roberts creation, I believe.
The graphics were great (at the time), the action was intense, and the story/voice-acting made you feel like you were part of something larger than life.
It really felt great to play that game.
And yes...I know it had its flaws. The friendly AI was near worthless (having to down 12 torpedos in 5-6 minutes was frustrating), and the story/character development (from what I've heard) was weak compared to other space sims like Wing Commander.
Still...I loved the heck out of that game.
Which brings me to Freelancer...another game I enjoyed...but nowhere as much as Starlancer.
As you might know, Freelancer is based some 800 years after the events of Starlancer. Apparently the Coalition (which you defeated in Starlancer) regrouped and defeated the Alliance...forcing them to flee to Sirius, where Freelancer is based.
It seemed that everything that made Starlancer great was missing from (or at least toned down in) Freelancer.
The story of Freelancer is weak compared to SL...there were no twists and betrayals, and too few 'missions gone terribly awry'.
The mission variety was lacking. I remember quite a few different types of missions in Starlancer, particularly Torpedo defense, and the stealth mission where you and your unit flew into the enemy shipyard with a group of stolen bombers and bombed the shit out of the base. -- View image here: http://arstechnica.infopop.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif --
Hmm...I'm going off on a ntangent here. As usual.
My question stands.
If you liked Stalancer...did you enjoy Freelancer as much?
